ROBOCON 2025 INSIGHTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

March 3, 2025
Tuukka Virtanen

It’s that time of the year again when talented automation professionals come to Helsinki, Finland, to share and to learn about the latest updates on Robot Framework and its ecosystem. The reason for this is, of course, RoboCon 2025, the premier event dedicated to the Robot Framework and its vibrant open-source community, which has made the whole thing possible. I was fortunate enough to attend the event and in this blog post, I want to share my key takeaways from this year.

Probably the biggest news was announced at the start of the conference in the opening presentation: the publication of the first official Robot Framework Certification (RFCP). After a long process of distilling the core concepts of Robot Framework into a syllabus and finding the right exam provider Gasq, the Robot Framework certification exams are now available. The first few people have now completed the exam and received the certification, and as the word in the community spreads, we will probably see its more widespread adoption in the near future.

During the two main conference days, there were many insightful talks and presentations. Here I’ve collected some (not an exhaustive list) of the links and libraries presented for you to read more on. Video recordings of the talks are usually made available on the official Robot Framework Foundation’s YouTube channel at a later date.

RoboCon 2025 highlights:

  • Make Automation Green Again – Experiments with AI supported self-healing (Many Kasiriha): A very interesting talk about the hot topic of self-healing and an example of working implementation: https://github.com/manykarim/robotframework-heal
  • Appium Self-healing for Robot Framework AppiumLibrary (Mohammed Sedky, Eslam Elmishtawy): Continuing the topic of self-healing with another approach, this time for Appium
  • Optimizing Mobile Testing using AppiumLibrary (Gabriela Simion, Felix Doppel): Nice illustration of how to use mobile testing labs services (SauceLabs in this case) with Robot Framework
  • Dear AI, Which Tests should Robot Framework Execute Now? (Dr. Elmar Jürgens): Great talk by Elmar with insights about how to cut test execution time by being smart in choosing which tests to run: https://teamscale.com/events/dear-ai-which-tests-should-robot-framework-execute-now
  • Robot Framework to the Rescue: Replacing EggPlant with a Custom UI-Test Library (Rico Feist, Lisa Böttinger): An example of using PlatynUI with Robot: https://github.com/imbus/robotframework-PlatynUI
  • Staying Aligned with Robot Framework Core: A Maintainer’s Perspective (Aleksi Simell): A very interesting talk about what it takes to maintain a library, in this case Jenkins RF plugin: https://plugins.jenkins.io/robot/
  • Transforming Robot Framework Results for Integrated Reporting – Introduction (Adam Mikulka): How to flatten Robot log keywords for easier understanding: https://github.com/Elirianne/robocon25-examples
  • Infrastructure as code – Yet another super power for your test automation (Nils Balkow-Tychsen): A Terraform library for Robot Framework: https://github.com/Nilsty/robotframework-terraformlibrary
  • In the world of DIY OP Test automation platform strikes back (Tomi Nurmi): How OP created a test automation platform to organize and manage test automation across a large organization and deals with autonomy vs. alignment.
  • Perfbot – Integrated performance analysis of robot tests (Lennart Potthoff): Very useful tool for analyzing test and keyword execution times and it can be run on the logs, no test runs needed: https://github.com/perfroboter/robotframework-perfbot
  • Behavior-Tree-Based Test-Case Specification (Noubar Akopian): How behavior-tree-based specifications can make your test scripts shorter and more readable: https://github.com/noubar/BehaviorTreeLibrary-Tests
  • AI-Powered Test Automation: Integrating Robot Framework with OpenAI (David Fogl): A workshop in integrating OpenAI with Robot: https://github.com/xfoggi/robocon2025-ai-workshop
  • The joys that keep us engaged with Robot Framework (Gerwin Laagland):  A great story about learning about Robot Framework and how it was adopted by the team and personally

Please check the official RoboCon 2025 program for more talks and information.

What I really like about RoboCon, is the atmosphere. There is always a warm and welcoming atmosphere at RoboCon. Everyone is there with the mindset of learning new stuff and sharing what they know. I saw many familiar faces again this year and hope to see you again in the years to come! Long live Robot Framework!
