INDUSTRY DEEP DIVE IN DATA GOVERNANCE – TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION

Fred Krimmelbein

This week I am continuing a series on the value and impact of Data Governance in a variety of business sectors. I am hopeful that this will give you some idea of how Data Governance can be helpful even in industries where it’s either considered low value or hard to implement. From my personal experience, several of these industries have expressed to me that it makes no sense to implement Data Governance because there is little value for them. This week I’m working through Travel and Transportation and how Data Governance can be of critical value to those who understand how to implement it and its true value. If you’ve read my book, you know I like to inject humor into my writing, so I’ve decided to do that in my articles now as well, I hope this more lighthearted article is to your liking.

Buckle Up, Buttercups: Your Crucial Deep Dive into Data Governance in Travel & Transportation

Ever wondered what keeps your suitcase from ending up in Timbuktu while you’re sipping piña coladas in Tahiti? Or why your flight isn’t double-booked with a flock of particularly grumpy geese? The answer, my friends, is not magic (though it sometimes feels like it). It’s data governance – the unsung hero of the travel and transportation industry, working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure your journey isn’t a one-way ticket to chaos.

Now, before your eyes glaze over at the mention of “data governance,” let’s inject a little humor into this otherwise serious topic. Think of data governance as the incredibly organized, slightly obsessive-compulsive tour guide for all your company’s information. It’s the one who ensures every piece of data has its passport, knows its destination, and isn’t caught trying to smuggle contraband (like outdated customer information or inconsistent booking IDs) across the border.

Why This Industry Is a Data Governance Disaster Movie

  • The “Your CO₂ Emission Just Got Banned from Europe” Problem CORSIA Phase 2 + EU-ETS aviation (full scope Jan 2027): every single flight needs a verifiable carbon footprint down to the kilogram. One wrong fuel-uplift number > €7.4 million fine + Greta blocking you on X.
  • The “Bag Tag Roulette” Problem 0.7% of bags get mishandled = 27 million lost suitcases per year. Cost to industry: $2.8 billion. Cost to your vacation: one sobbing spouse in flip-flops at baggage claim.
  • The “My Locomotive Runs on Windows 2000 and Pure Rage” Problem Average age of US freight locomotives: 21 years. Average age of the Excel file tracking wheel wear: older than Instagram.
  • The “Passenger Name Record = GDPR’s Worst Nightmare” Problem One airline breach = 500 million PNRs on the dark web. Price per record: $180. Price of class-action lawsuit: all the money.

Why is This Even a Thing? (Besides My Existential Dread About Lost Luggage)

In an industry built on precision, timing, and making sure millions of people and packages get from A to B without spontaneously combusting, good data is not just important – it’s the jet fuel.

  • Customer Experience: Imagine booking a “deluxe ocean view” only to find yourself staring at a brick wall. Or your loyalty points disappear faster than a free upgrade. Bad data leads to cranky customers, and cranky customers lead to bad reviews, which is basically the digital equivalent of a public shaming on a billboard. Data governance ensures you know your customer, what they want, and how to deliver it consistently.
  • Operational Efficiency: Think of all the moving parts: flights, trains, rental cars, hotels, shipping containers, the guy who drives the little airport shuttle bus. If the data connecting these pieces is wonky, you’ve got delays, reroutes, missed connections, and enough logistical headaches to make a chiropractor weep. Good data governance streamlines operations, making everything run smoother than a freshly paved runway.
  • Safety and Compliance: This isn’t just about making sure you get your gluten-free meal on the plane. It’s about ensuring planes are maintained on schedule, drivers have valid licenses, and hazardous materials aren’t accidentally shipped next to a box of kittens. Data governance ensures regulatory compliance and, more importantly, keeps everyone safe and sound.
  • Innovation and Personalization: Want to offer personalized travel packages based on past trips? Predict demand for certain routes? Develop self-driving vehicles that don’t mistake a cow for a speed bump? All of this requires clean, accurate, and well-managed data. Without it, your innovative efforts are like trying to build a rocket ship with a toy hammer and some duct tape.

The Value Proposition: More Than Just a Fancy Spreadsheet

So, what’s the big payoff for all this meticulous data wrangling?

  • Reduced Costs (aka More Money for Fun Stuff): Fewer errors mean less time spent fixing mistakes, fewer customer service complaints, and more efficient resource allocation. That’s money you can reinvest in, say, upgrading your in-flight entertainment or finally getting those lie-flat seats in economy (we can dream, right?).
  • Increased Revenue (Cha-Ching!): Better customer understanding leads to more targeted marketing, increased upsell opportunities, and stronger customer loyalty. When customers trust your data, they trust your brand, and they’re more likely to spend their hard-earned cash with you.
  • Mitigated Risk (No More Nasty Surprises): Avoiding regulatory fines, security breaches, and operational disasters is priceless. Data governance acts as your digital bodyguard, protecting you from potentially catastrophic data-related mishaps.
  • Enhanced Decision Making (Because Guesswork is for Amateurs): With reliable data at their fingertips, leaders can make informed decisions about everything from route planning to pricing strategies, leading to a competitive edge that’ll leave your rivals in the dust (or the wake of your perfectly scheduled flight).

Operating for ROI: Showing Off Your Data Governance Prowess

“Sounds great,” you say, “but how do I convince my CFO that spending money on data governance isn’t just buying fancy paperweights for data stewards?”

Demonstrating ROI for data governance isn’t about pulling a rabbit out of a hat; it’s about connecting the dots between your data efforts and tangible business outcomes.

  • Start Small, Think Big: Don’t try to boil the ocean. Pick a critical business area with clear data pain points (e.g., customer booking errors, inventory discrepancies). Implement data governance solutions there and meticulously track the improvements.
  • Measure, Measure, Measure: Before and after. This is your mantra.
  • Reduced Error Rates: Track the decrease in booking errors, incorrect shipments, or misrepresented inventory. Quantify the time and money saved.
  • Improved Customer Satisfaction: Monitor NPS scores, complaint volumes, and customer retention rates. Show how accurate data translates to happier customers.
  • Faster Time-to-Market: If clean data allows you to launch new services or products more quickly, quantify that acceleration.
  • Compliance Cost Savings: Demonstrate how streamlined data processes reduce the burden and cost of regulatory compliance.
  • Operational Efficiency Gains: Track reductions in processing times, fuel consumption (if data optimization plays a role), or resource allocation.
  • Speak the Language of Business: Your executives care about revenue, cost, and risk. Frame your data governance successes in these terms. Instead of saying, “We improved data quality by 15%,” say, “Improved data quality led to a 5% reduction in customer service calls, saving us $X per month.”
  • Showcase Success Stories: Share anecdotes. “Remember that time Mrs. Henderson’s luggage went to Vladivostok? Thanks to our new data governance initiative, that’s a problem of the past! And Mrs. Henderson is now a loyal customer, thanks to our ability to fix things quickly with accurate information.”
  • Build a Data-Driven Culture: This isn’t just an IT project; it’s a company-wide shift. Get everyone from the baggage handler to the CEO on board with the importance of good data. When everyone understands their role in data quality, the ROI practically generates itself.

Data governance in travel and transportation isn’t just a necessary evil; it’s the secret sauce that keeps the industry moving forward, making your journeys smoother, your luggage where it should be, and your experience (mostly) free of unforeseen adventures. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I hear the pilot announcing boarding for my perfectly governed flight to a data-driven future!
