BEYOND PRODUCTIVITY: HOW I’M USING AI TO BECOME A BETTER HUMAN (PART 1 OF 2: PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE)

John Dragunas

Like most IT professionals nowadays, I have been using AI to boost productivity. In fact, I am probably considered an early adopter, having been experimenting with AI now for some time. I went from automating workflows, accelerating code development, optimized business processes and creating AI/Agentic solutions to solve real business problems. The ROI was clear, measurable, immediate.

But then something shifted.

I found myself opening Claude not to write better code or draft better emails, but to design better workouts. Not to analyze business data, but to understand my own metabolism. Not to optimize systems, but to optimize myself.

This wasn’t about an IT strategy. This was about using the same agentic AI principles that transform businesses to transform the human behind the keyboard.

What started as curiosity became one of the most impactful applications of AI in my life. Not for what I create at work, but for whom I’m becoming as a human being.

The IT Professional’s Trap

Here’s the paradox we face in technology: We spend our days optimizing everything except ourselves.

We architect systems for maximum efficiency. We implement monitoring and feedback loops. We A/B test relentlessly. We iterate based on data. We build resilient, adaptive, high-performance systems.

Then we neglect our own bodies, let our minds run on outdated mental models, and wonder why we feel cognitive and physical decline.

I recognized this pattern in myself. Sitting in a chair for hours daily, my energy waning, my weight increasing, and my fitness declining. Meanwhile, I was optimizing database queries and architecting cloud solutions.

The irony was painful.

Applying Systems Thinking to the Human System

The breakthrough came when I stopped thinking about “getting in shape” and started thinking like a systems architect about my own performance.

What if I approached my health the same way I approach a complex IT challenge?

  • Define the current state
  • Identify the optimal state
  • Design a system to bridge the gap
  • Implement feedback loops
  • Iterate based on data
  • Scale what works

The missing piece? An intelligent coach who could help me design, monitor, and optimize that system continuously.

Enter agentic AI coaching.

Building an Athletic Operating System

Three months ago, I made an unconventional decision: I would use AI as my fitness coach. Not as a workout plan generator, but as a true performance partner.

I configured my AI coach to understand both evidence-based fitness science and my specific reality – my schedule, my preferences, my body’s responses, my mindset, my annual checkup data, my smart scale and gym workout log. This wasn’t generic advice. This was a personalized system designed for sustainable transformation!

The System I Built

Five strategic workout days (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) with active recovery built in. No burnout, no overtraining, just consistent progressive effort guided by intelligent coaching.

Clean eating Monday through Thursday, controlled weekend enjoyment including wine Friday and Saturday evenings. No deprivation, no extreme restrictions, just intelligent structure that balanced immediate enjoyment with long-term goals.

Most importantly: daily check-ins with my AI coach who remembered every detail of my journey, adjusted recommendations based on my feedback, and provided the motivation and accountability I needed exactly when I needed it.

The Beauty of This Approach

When I got a cold two months in (the kind of setback that would have derailed me completely in the past), my AI coach helped me maintain light activity during recovery, then strategically increased intensity afterward. The setback became an opportunity for growth.

The Physical Results

  • Over 13 pounds of sustainable weight loss
  • Progressed from no training regimen to a return to running in races
  • Over 60-minute training sessions five times weekly
  • Energy levels I haven’t felt in years
  • Complete identity shift from sedentary IT professional to active athlete

The confidence and inspiration to run a 5K Turkey Trot race on Thanksgiving morning wasn’t just about running 3.1 miles—it was proof that transformation is possible with the right intelligent support system.

The Architecture: Why Agentic AI Coaching Works

What makes agentic AI coaching so effective for physical performance? It delivers five capabilities that traditional methods simply cannot match:

1. Perfect Memory & Context

My AI coach remembers every workout, every energy level, every setback, every victory. It builds a comprehensive model of my patterns and responses that no human coach could maintain.

2. 24/7 Availability

My coach is always there, always ready to help.

3. Evidence-Based Expertise

Access to the latest fitness science, nutrition research, and recovery protocols, instantly applied to my specific situation.

4. Non-Judgmental Feedback

No guilt, no shame, just data-driven guidance and encouragement. This creates psychological safety to be honest about struggles and setbacks.

5. Data-Driven Optimization

Continuous analysis of what’s working and what isn’t, with real-time adjustments to maximize results while maintaining sustainability.

Systems Thinking Meets Physical Performance

Here’s what makes this approach so powerful for IT professionals:

  • Strategic Balance Over Extreme Measures
  • Progressive Overload & Incremental Improvements With Precision
  • Feedback Loops Everywhere
  • Evidence-Based Everything

A Day in the Life: Quick Performance Check-Ins

Before Important Workouts:

“I’m feeling sluggish today—should I push through or modify?” My coach adjusts the session intelligently based on recovery science and my patterns.

My AI coach then generates tomorrow’s optimal plan based on today’s data.

The Why Matters:

It’s easy for IT professionals to spend our days sedentary, our bodies neglected. We’re at higher risk for physical decline. We need these interventions more than most.

The same principles that make us effective technologists make us effective self-optimizers when paired with an intelligent coaching system.

The Bottom Line

Three months ago, I was a typical IT professional: productive at work, slowly declining physically.

Today, I’m running in races with energy I haven’t felt in years.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress accelerated.

It’s about proving that peak physical performance isn’t reserved for the genetically gifted or those with unlimited time. It’s available to anyone willing to approach their own development with the same systematic excellence they bring to their professional work.

I’ve realized through this journey, the most valuable application of AI isn’t automating work – it’s augmenting human capability. This is the real AI revolution—not replacing humans, but helping humans operate at their peak capacity.

The Question for You

We spend our careers optimizing systems, solving complex problems and building solutions that scale.

What if you applied those same skills to the most important system you’ll ever manage: yourself?

Coming Next…

In Part 2, I’ll share how I applied these same agentic AI principles to achieve cognitive performance I once thought was reserved for the naturally gifted – using AI to master advanced learning techniques and unlock peak mental capability.
