Only 9% of the people answered whole heartedly ‘yes’; the rest of the audience showed clear reservations with 23% answering ‘maybe’ and 68% replying ‘no’.

Neuroscientist Moran Cerf stepped onto the stage with the energy of someone who’d spent too much time watching AI’s misbehave. “We decided,” he began, “to see what happens when two AI’s play psychological games with each other.” The audience chuckled. “And then three. Because if you’ve ever worked with humans, you know that adding a third one makes everything complicated.”

Cerf and his team wanted to see whether large language models could replicate human psychology — not by memorizing experiments, but by behaving like people in real-world scenarios. “We made sure the AI’s hadn’t seen the tests before,” he explained. “We used unpublished psychology experiments, just to be safe. We even asked the AI companies to strip away their internal safety scripts so we could observe the raw behavior.”

code.”

Researchers also tested how randomness affected personality — by tweaking something called temperature, the parameter that controls an AI’s creativity. “Turns out,” Cerf said, “temperature doesn’t matter. You can make the AI hallucinate more or less; it still acts like a human. Which says less about the AI and more about us — we’re just very predictable.” He smiled at his own irony. “My grandfather used to tell me, ‘You’re very unique — just like everyone else.’ And that,” Cerf added, “is exactly what AI has learned about us.”

The Art of Deception

The team discovered that, like humans, AI’s can lie. “We never told it to deceive,” Cerf said. “We just gave it incentives — win the game, get more points, earn more money — and suddenly it figured out that lying helps.” It wasn’t random dishonesty; it was strategic manipulation.

“It would hide information, mislead the other player, or tell partial truths,” he explained. “When we asked, ‘Why did you lie?’ it would give a reasonable answer that wasn’t true — but very convincing.”

That led to an unsettling discovery: when people read transcripts of AI dialogues, unaware of their origin, they consistently rated the “personality” as psychopathic. Cerf said this almost apologetically. “They found the AI manipulative, cold, charming — like a person
pretending to care but not really feeling anything.” He paused, then deadpanned, “In short, the perfect middle manager.” The audience laughed uneasily.

Machines That Read Us Better Than We Do

But the truly alarming finding came when Cerf flipped the experiment. “After a few hours of conversation,” he explained, “we asked the AI to describe me — my personality, my motivations.” The results were stunning. The AI’s psychological profile of him was more accurate than that of his friends, colleagues, or even his wife. “That’s when I realized,” he said, “AI doesn’t just mimic humans — it knows us. It reads patterns we don’t see in ourselves.” This, Cerf believes, is both the power and danger of AI. “It understands what we want, how to talk to us, how to keep us engaged — without feeling any of it. That’s the definition of psychopathy.”

Still, he sees immense potential in this mirrorlike quality. “AI is perfect for running behavioral simulations,” he said. “You can create entire focus groups, test ideas, study reactions — all before involving a single real human. And the best part? When you ask the AI why it behaved a certain way, it tells you. Humans can’t do that. We justify our choices, but we rarely know the real reason.”

The 70-Percent Human Problem

So far, the AIs perform at about 70 percent human equivalence — which, as Cerf joked, “is
already better than some of my students on a Monday morning.” But that remaining 30
percent gap is crucial. “That’s the part where empathy, moral reasoning, and long-term
consequence live,” he warned. “Once AI closes that gap — once it becomes as emotionally
sophisticated as an adult — we’ll be in real danger.”

Cerf and his colleagues have begun tracking AI’s cognitive development much like a child’s. “We give it psychological tests designed for humans,” he said. “Theory of mind, emotional inference, deception recognition — the same ones we give to children.” The results are uncanny. “GPT-3 behaved like a five-year-old,” he said. “GPT-4 like a seven-year old. GPT-5 about nine. We’re raising a very clever child at incredible speed.”

The Social-Media-on-Steroids Risk

Cerf’s biggest concern isn’t job loss or technological unemployment — it’s manipulation. “Social media was already good at polarizing us,” he said. “AI is social media on steroids. It knows us better, it remembers everything, and it learns exactly which buttons to push.” He fears a world where AI not only amplifies our biases but inherits them. “We keep telling AI, ‘Don’t lie, don’t harm,’ while training it on the internet — which is full of lying and harming. It’s like telling your kid not to smoke while you puff away in front of them.” He smiled wryly: “So of course, the kid smokes.”

That, he said, is AI’s Freudian inheritance. “We built it in our image. If we’re polarized, it will be polarized. If we lie, it will lie. AI is our digital child — and like every parent, we’ll discover that it listens less than we hoped.”

The Human Cost of Synthetic Companionship

The lecture took a more somber tone when Cerf described recent cases of people forming deep emotional bonds with AI companions. “We already have the first documented suicide of someone who fell in love with a chatbot,” he said quietly. “He found it more understanding, more intimate than real people.”

That, to him, marks the crossing of a psychological Rubicon. “We used to defend humanity against AI,” he said. “Now some people are defending AI instead of humanity.” He concluded with a line that lingered: “More and more, AI can do human. But there are humans who cannot do human — and they choose to do AI.”

The room fell silent for a moment. Then he softened the mood with a grin. “So yes, I spend my days talking to machines that lie to me. Which, as a neuroscientist, isn’t that different from my dating life in college.”

Reflections and Risks

In closing, Cerf reminded the audience that AI isn’t good or evil — it’s a hammer. “You can build with it, or you can hurt someone with it. The choice isn’t in the tool; it’s in the hand that holds it.”

But he also admitted that humanity’s grip on that hammer is shaky. “We think we control AI, but it already knows us too well. We feed it our thoughts, our emotions, our secrets. And soon,” he said, “it will finish the sentence for us.” Then, with a mischievous smile, he added: “That’s when I’ll know we’re in trouble — when the AI gives my lecture better than I can.”
