It has taken us quite a while to truly understand what exactly the Internet of Things is all about. In one of my recent blog posts, we learned from PTC-owned company ThingWorx how Smart, Connected Things Will Transform Manufacturers. This, I assure you, is a role model fuction which other industries should carefully bear in mind, rethink and act upon!
The Business of Caring for People
Gartner predicts that manufacturers, healthcare and insurance will enjoy the best Economic Value-Add from the IoT: 15, 15, and 11 percent. Now what have they in common? They all par excellence are in the Business of Caring for People. That is what the IoT is all about. Tim O’Reilly also pointed this out for us recently when he spoke of the Internet of Things & Humans, the IoTH.
A Smart Systems Disruption
Too easy for you? Need more proof? Fine! Just have a look at the way Harbor Research characterizes the IoTH Ubiquity Shift as a Smart Systems Disruption:

Of course, everyone who is in the Business of Caring for People and All We Care For will be affected. How exactly? That is what Joseph A. di Paolantonio mindmapped for us in great detail. He says: “The Internet of Things relates to all M2M communications & data exchange, and, ultimately, M2H (Machine-to-Human that is).”

Now, if you still do not have something of a clue, let me give you my own personal take. IoT and M2M is all about the Digital Disneyfication of Our World.
The fourth stage of the Industrial Revolution is upon us due to the far-reaching integration, accelerated by the Internet of Things, of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT). This creates completely new opportunities as a result of new combinations of mental, physical and mechanical work by integrating the internet, sensors and embedded systems.
